AVP Description

Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) was the first educational program in the U.S. cofacilitated by those inside and outside of prison, which started in the 1970s, emerging out of the prison riots. It was also one of the first organizations dedicated to promoting the goal of the Beloved Community founded by Dr. Martin L. King Jr.

“’Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), active in 33 states and 45 countries was founded in the 1970s during the prison riots started in Greenhaven Prison, New York. AVP brings together diverse groups of people to build Dr. King’s nonviolent ‘beloved community.’ Together, we will build a more peaceful and equitable world. AVP-USA is an association of community, school and prison-based groups offering experiential workshops in personal growth, community development and creative conflict management. Founded in prison and developed from the real life experiences of prisoners, AVP encourages every person’s innate power to positively transform first themselves and then the world we live in. AVP recognized by the United Nations and the Department of Corrections, has three workshops that are twenty hours each, Basic, Advanced, and Training for Facilitators.”’ This three hour 101 introduction workshop on Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) will have three sessions. This workshop, grounded in social justice and building the global beloved community is an engaging, interactive, collaborative, and experiential educational learning environment, that will get people to talk, brainstorm, run and move around, and talk about their own lives.
